Webscreen Named as Finalist in BCS IT Industry Awards

Webscreen Systems Ltd, the Leeds based network security software development company, has been named as a finalist in this year's British Computer Society's IT industry awards, which is being staged on December 6th at London's Grosvenor House Hotel.

This year's event coincides with the 50th anniversary of the BCS which now has over 60,000 members across 100 countries. The awards are designed to recognise excellence and innovation across a wide range of technology based products and projects. Webscreen has been listed as a finalist in the Information Security and Data Management Project award section alongside major names such as BT, the London Stock Exchange and Messagelabs.

Webscreen has been short listed for its work in developing its WS series network management and security appliances, which are designed to protect businesses with a critical Internet presence from the growing problem of denial of service attack, now one of the fastest growing worldwide issues facing the ecommerce industry. It is estimated that in the US alone there are over 5,000 DDoS attacks per day aimed at major corporations as well as Government targets, with many of them emanating from Eastern Europe and the Far East.

The company has developed a unique way of preventing any attacks from reaching the Web site whilst maintaining network availability for critical users and customers to continue to trade online until the problem is resolved. Unlike most other DDoS solutions the technology monitors the behaviour of all IP traffic at the network perimeter and dynamically filters out malicious and low priority connections only when the network performance begins to degrade.

Including a suite of network management, reporting and bandwidth optimisation tools Webscreen is extensively used as a Guarantee of Service technology for a wide range of critical Web based applications including major e-tailers, online gaming companies, financial and banking organisations and ISPs.

Alistair Nield, VP of Sales at Webscreen commented "Clearly we are delighted to have been recognised by our fellow IT professionals in this way. Denial of Service is now one of the fastest growing problems for the Internet right across the world. The recent Storm Worm outbreak is a classic example of the threat and has sent alarm bells ringing throughout the industry with major security companies including Symantec and Verisign predicting doomsday scenarios if the full power of the resultant Botnet is ever unleashed. Companies are beginning to realise that DDoS is a serious threat to their operations and is not just confined to a small minority of ecommerce based businesses. This recognition puts us in an ideal position to provide a proven solution for any business which needs to Guarantee Service for its users."

Commenting for the BCS, Anna Duckworth Head of Corporate Marketing said "Year on year the standard of entries increases and this year is no exception with innovative projects which showcase excellence in IT. The next stage of the judging will be very difficult as our expert panel endeavours to select the outright winners for each award." ENDS

About Webscreen Technology

www.webscreen-technology.com

Webscreen is the world's most advanced defence against Network Integrity attacks. Using its patented CHARM technology, the WS1000 will ensure that genuine users/customers of the website always have access while attack traffic is dropped. Unlike conventional IPS systems, Webscreen uses heuristic algorithms to detect Network Integrity attacks. Webscreen looks at the nature of the access rather than their exact signature, so an update is not required every time a new Network Integrity attack tool is developed. Webscreen is installed inline, between the DMZ containing an organization's web servers and its connection to the Internet backbone. Typically the Webscreen device will be installed in front of any fire walls, load balancers or bandwidth shapers so that it can protect them from denial of service, high traffic overloads, and other problems which may result in denial of service.

Webscreen is available on an Intel appliance platform providing up to 10Mb connectivity and throughput speeds of up 0.5m packets/sec. It is also available as an APM on the Crossbeam C & X series UTM appliances and the IBM Blade Centre for enterprise scale deployments

Webscreen is distributed in the US by ComputerLinks and is available through strategic partners in the Asia PAC region. For UK & European partners please contact Alistair Nield on Tel +44 (0) 870 389 0033.
