Brief History

Back in the late '90s, Reuters posed a challenge to two of its leading security consultants, Gary Milo and Mike Cudmore.

"How can we keep the website available during a large spike in traffic, whilst at the same time make sure that our paying, regular customers are prioritised over first time visitors?"

In short, Reuters wanted to intelligently and gracefully protect the corporate web site from resource floods which occurred when a news incident broke.

Often due to the sheer volume of traffic directed at the site the web servers would crash or at the very least the service response would drop to an unacceptable level. Worst still, the paying clients would not be able to access information they had subscribed to. The real challenge lay in the fact that there wasn't a product on the market that could intelligently protect against legitimate floods of traffic.

One Friday afternoon in 1999, Gary and Mike had moment of genius and created the theory behind the CHARM algorithm.

Realising that they had unearthed something special, Gary and Mike took the idea to the investor community and secured funding to develop Webscreen. Jon Shallow of Cyberguard fame was recruited as the principle architect and quickly turned Gary and Mike's vision into a commercial reality.

The WS100 was launched in 2001, just as the global business community were realising the damaging effects inflicted by malicious resource floods, more commonly known as Distributed Denial of service attacks (DDoS). The product was an instant success and provided a fresh and simple approach to what is a complicated problem.

Since then Webscreen has grown its market share and now protects some of the most high profile ebusiness websites in the world. More recently, Webscreen has been adopted by ISPs, ASPs and system integrators where service availability is a key requirement. The ISP community is growing rapidly, and Webscreen is proving its worth not only to protect the Data Centre infrastructure, but also to differentiate the ISP service proposition.

In July 2005 Webscreen was acquired by a privately funded management team and promptly relocated to Leeds, in the north of England . Today, Webscreen protects over 5 million websites worldwide and across many vertical market sectors.

Although the business dynamic may change from client to client, the requirement for guaranteed availability remains a constant and Webscreen's customers have come to depend upon its proven approach to keep their critical assets available at all times.
