World's largest distributor of digital music chooses Webscreen protection against DDOS attacks...

The European arm of LoudeyeOD2, the world's largest provider of digital music for customers such as MSN, MTV, Coca-Cola, Tiscali and HMV, has chosen Webscreen's to protect it from DDOS and other network- based attacks. The Webscreen solution will be used to filter out malicious traffic in the event of cyberattack whilst allowing the genuine website traffic of 4 million page-hits per hour through.

Loudeye OD2 chose Webscreen after experiencing denial of service attacks which sent malicious data at the server the equivalent of 150,000 transactions per second. The Webscreen solution will not only be used to protect OD2 from DDOS attacks but also from smaller scale network attacks, such as TCPIP exploits. This means the company is able to guarantee continued uptime for provision of encoding, encryption, hosting, delivery and royalty management of digital music for its big name customer brands.

Many of these attacks are continually targeting a large online company such as OD2 and it is expected that the Webscreen solution will immediately free up around 20% of the company's overall bandwidth because of reduction of this ongoing malicious traffic. The solution sits in front of a company firewall and filters out malicious traffic using complex algorithms to recognise network attacks, meaning it does not rely on signature updates.

Mike Jones, European Director of IS at Loudeye OD2 said, "The Webscreen solution is vital to our business because if one of these attacks was of significant enough magnitude to compromise our servers it could bring down all reliant customer websites across Europe. To be able to guarantee uptime against these types of cyberattacks means that we can continue offering digital music on behalf of big name brands safe in the knowledge that the content will always be available to their consumers.

"As the cybercriminal develops alongside organised crime to offer continually advanced methods of threatening online companies there is a definite need to ensure that Loudeye OD2 is prepared for everything they might throw at us. The fact that the Webscreen solution can be installed and ready to work in a few hours is also a huge plus as this means that deployment and running costs are kept to an absolute minimum."

Robin Hill VP. Sales of Webscreen said, "The incidences of network and DDOS attacks on companies with a large online presence have soared in the last year or so, with many high profile attacks. Spending days with no web-presence means huge costs to these companies. Couple this with the bandwidth costs of carrying all the ongoing malicious traffic and there is a real business case for employing this kind of technology."
